Caravana de migrantes con destino a Estados Unidos sale del sur de México
Varios miles de migrantes partieron desde el sur de México en una caravana con destino a Estados Unidos. País, que espera abordar la migración regional durante las conversaciones en la Cumbre de las Américas esta semana en Los Ángeles.
Activistas de migración indicaron que la caravana, que partió de la ciudad mexicana de Tapachula el lunes, podría ser una de las más grandes de la región en los últimos años.
Se estima que la caravana incluye entre 4 mil y 5 mil personas, en su mayoría de América Central, Venezuela y Cuba, testigos señalaron, que el grupo contaba con aproximadamente 6 mil personas.
El Instituto Nacional de Migración de México no proporcionó una estimación del tamaño del grupo. Y tampoco, ofreció comentarios adicionales sobre la caravana.
La caravana, supera por mucho a las anteriores, que comenzaron en 2018
El organizador de la caravana, Luis García Villagrán, indicó que el grupo representaba a varias nacionalidades. Personas que huyen de las dificultades en sus países de origen, incluidas muchas de Venezuela.
«Estos son países que colapsan por la pobreza y la violencia», afirmó. «Instamos encarecidamente a quienes asistan a la cumbre… Para ver lo que está sucediendo, y lo que podría suceder aún más a menudo en México, si no se hace algo pronto».
Tapachula sirve como un punto clave en el viaje de muchos migrantes y solicitantes de asilo que esperan llegar a los Estados Unidos. Miles de personas llegan a la ciudad en el estado de Chiapas, al sureste de México, en los últimos meses.
Durante meses, la gente se queja de que la estrategia de México de contenerlos en los confines más australes del país les ha hecho la vida miserable. Muchos tienen deudas significativas por su migración y hay pocas oportunidades de trabajo en el sur de México.
La caravana partió cuando el presidente mexicano, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, indicó que no asistiría a la Cumbre de las Américas, lo que supuso un golpe a los esfuerzos de la administración Biden para utilizar las reuniones para construir más cooperación regional en materia de migración.
El presidente de Estados Unidos, Joe Biden, quien prometió revertir algunas de las políticas de inmigración más restrictivas de su predecesor Donald Trump, está bajo presión para abordar el creciente número de solicitantes de asilo que llegan a la frontera sur del país con México.
